Medium strength for developing players

The medium strength helps players transition out of softer student reeds without overworking the embouchure. There's enough resistance to start developing tone and dynamic control, but not so much that long practice sessions become a slog. This is the reed we hand to players preparing for Grade 4 and 5 exams, or stepping into county and regional ensemble work.

Built to last, made to adjust

The thicker tip helps the reed survive the bumps and knocks that take out so many student reeds. The construction lets your teacher make small adjustments (opening the tip, balancing the response) to suit your playing as it evolves.

My daughter's favourite reeds

The Academy Oboe Reeds by Crook & Staple have been my daughter's favourite reeds since her 4th year learning oboe. She is now at her 9th year.

Good Reed

This is a good Reed. Although recommended by my daughters oboe teacher she later advised that it was too hard she has had to scrape it two or three times already.

New User

My daughter in jr. high is getting great sound from the reeds we've purchased. The wire helps her control the sound. When the wire eventually moves after playing for some time, she uses plastic wrap to keep it in place. It requires weekly adjustment after that. Very happy.

Stable and Nice Tone

Reed was stable and even through the scale! Had to clip it a bit to build in resistance and scrape to darken the sound a little bit, but the stability in the scale and especially the responsiveness in the low register are excellent!

Academy Oboe Reed

This reed plays very nicely and has a more refined tone than some reeds I have played. It took a long time to “break in” which is why I have awarded four rather than five stars. I was a beginner this time last year and I would have struggled with this Reed.

Favourite reeds

Beautiful reeds

I have used Urbach reeds for 50 years and I love them . The cane is far superior to other makes . Usually come ready to blow , just slight wire adjustment.

Excellent, stable reeds

These reeds are well made and playable straight out of the box. Good attack at the bottom but also maintaining a good tone in the tenor register.

Disappointed product

Didn’t get a chance to use it as it split when soaking. The packaging was horrific and when I tried to reach out to return and have another sent, it kept me going in loops. I wanted to try this product and I’m really disappointed in the product and company. For the price, I was hoping it would be better. Will not order from here again.

Great reed.

The Alaw Reed played great straight out of the package. Good tone and the low notes popped out fantastically and easily. Upper register played well with good pitch.

Work well

Diamond stones work well to keep my reed knife sharp.

Alaw bassoon reed a success

Very pleased with my new Alaw reed. Good tone and controllabillity.
Pitching accurately required a bit of getting used to at first but it now behaves very well excellent sound :and responsive .

A wonderful reed!

This is a fabulous reed. After its initial soak, it has always played immediately from the case. It produces a mellow, rather than a bright, sound - and that is my preference. The low notes are as easy to play (even quietly) as I have ever experienced in a reed. I will definitely be buying this reed again.

C&S "professional" reeds are not usually available so I bought this Argento six months ago. I liked it better than Alaw and Urbach, in fact it was so good I just bought another. The new one is every bit as good. No adjustment was needed, it worked well immediately.

Played beautifully straight out of the box

Very pleased with these, not too resistent or hard but also not too reedy/easy, just right for me with a good tone on a loree cor.

Fantastic reed

So relieved to find a reed that works for me. Fairly free blowing but with good depth of tone and stability. Good to go straight from the box. Perfect for me right now. Praying they remain consistent with their production. Very happy so far. Have bought several. Happy days.
